The Weekend Focus: American Apparel

WHOA….
Now I couldn’t help but to do a post about American Apparel! Not only do I love their clothes…but I have a strong affinity towards their controversial advertisements that are plastered up and down Manhattan. You can find these ads plastered on the back pages of Village Voice newspaper & in the magazines…and I have to admit that I love these ads. I’ve even day-dreamed of modeling for one of these ads [after losing 15lbs]. I can’t front…I’d still do it….after my summer diet commences! So yesterday after coming home from some Friday shopping….I went online to look for a few items. I so happen to start my search on American Apparel - only to see what new goodies were up for sale…..and my eyes got stuck on this photo featuring model Kirsten in Slim Slacks. We all know that sex does sell here in America….but what happens when things go a tad bit too far? Do we say that it’s artist expression at is best….or do we think that American Apparel’s objective flurries around the “Shock Value” theory? What caught my attention the most was the fact that the model had her hands inside of her pants, oh and please let’s not forget the sultry spit bubble shot that is reminiscent of something you might take full view of….while watching porn [that is if you do watch porn]. And please don’t let me get started on the nipple shot..ALL OF THIS FOR THE SAKE OF SLIM SLACKS? Either way I couldn’t help but to sit in view of something so explicitly suggestive - I felt compelled to say something! What do you ladies think about American Apparel’s ads?

I don’t like it. I’m all for pushing boundries and I’m actually a fan of risqué advertising and seeing how far they can go but this is just tacky. It looks like a mix between a girl posing for Myspace and a porn movie.
It does what it says on the tin though, they want you to look at this and say to someone “Have you seen the AA ad?”. They just want you to talk about it and look, it’s working!

WOOOOOOOOW! (said live Flavor Flav) If u didn’t hip a chick to the jeans, I wouldn’t have noticed that this was an Ad…ummm, I’m all for creative expression and pushin a few envelopes, but from the looks of things, I’m led to beleive that these jeans r good for playin wit yo’self, gettin it from the back, and takin the children to your tonsils. Is that the jist of it? Pardon my frankness….

Their ads are ridiculous. This isn’t empowerment or sexy–it’s a male-owned company using women’s sexuality for profit. Women have regressed. But this is par for the course with that company. Just be grateful you’re not a woman who works for them:
